Even though we are all socially distancing right now, there are still a lot of ways to celebrate Earth Day today. You can take ten seconds, or several hours, based on what feels good to you!
Tonight my husband and I are so excited that the Lyrid meteor shower is falling (literally) on Earth Day and plan to incorporate looking up to the heavens as a part of our Earth Day festivities. Join in the fun with us and pick something from the list below if you need some inspiration:
Getting Active
1. Join us outside tonight for a spectacular display of natural fireworks to celebrate Earth Day in the form of meteors (check your time zone to see when they are most visible!)
2. Enjoy a walk, run, or hike on our beautiful planet while maintaining at least three meters of distance from others. Don't forget your trendy (and safe) face mask! :)
3. Consider starting, or working in, your own garden. If you live in a home with an established garden, enjoy some time soaking up vitamin D while watering your flowers or veggies--if you live with less land or in an apartment, think about planning a garden for the future, or take care of a plant that will thrive inside!
Slowing Down
4. Experience the meditative qualities of nature--sit out on your deck/porch, in your yard, or even just open a window if you are able. Appreciate what you see outside from birds to trees to the beautiful clouds rolling over the bright blue sky.
5. If you are feeling more adventurous, consider sitting with yourself in silence (or maybe pull up some nature sounds on your phone) and give gratitude for the many bounties that our planet provides for us. The oxygen that plants recycle for us, the food that comes from the earth, or the feeling of being kissed by a warm breeze on the beach.
6. Thinking about enjoying Earth Day from your couch? Stream an eco-documentary or Netflix special for the Earth like Planet Earth narrated by Sir. David Attenborough.
7. Want something in real time that is guaranteed to be cute? Check out some of the live-streams from zoos and aquariums nationwide like the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago that will bring non-indigenous animals right to your living room!
8. Enjoy live streams or politics? Tune into https://www.earthdaylive2020.org/ to hear about current activism for the Earth and how to get involved!
Activism 9. Donate to a charity that benefits the planets such as the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) or another group that benefits all the species of the planet.
10. Consider learning more about recyclables and/or what your province is able to recycle. Are there change you can make in what you buy or how you buy it to help our planet? Thank you!
Prepare, don't panic.
