This week we waited for four days after election day, but can now shout in resounding joy, congratulations President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris.
After a contentious and combative battle for the White House, we are now breathing a sigh of relief knowing that the memory of the last four years may one day be just that a memory. The people of the nation have condemned President Trump's actions through our own actions to change the course of history to begin to turn the tide.
Not only do we recognize the immense power held by this highest office in the land; we recognize the unspoken requirements to hold this office as it was meant to be upheld: character, honesty, integrity. Qualities that have been sorely lacking and actively demeaned by Pres. Trump in his time tainting the White House.
More than this...when I saw the news that the Biden-Harris ticket had prevailed victorious today I was surprised that I felt tears spring to my eyes. Living in Pres. Trump's America it became clearer and clearer every day that I as a woman am, and will never be in Pres. Trump's eyes, equal to a man. I am not enough. I am lesser than.
Pretty much every demographic that does not belong to cisgendered, white men have been made to feel this way. No matter how tough a person may be, these ideas impact your sense of self. Seeing white men (and sometimes women) allowed to brandish firearms at minorities, interrupt those who use a gentler tone, and just blatantly lie and skew the truth in every direction broke down my ability to hope for a better tomorrow. Seeing Kamala Harris walk with such purpose and dignity to the place she now resides broke open the dam of negative feelings I did not even realize I had felt for the past four years.
But, as it is being said now, "wear your shoes ladies, there is glass all over the floor." She shattered that ceiling, along with several others through pure grit, empathy, and intellect.
Both Joe and Kamala spoke to the people as though we are people. No condescension, only gratitude; no blame, only appreciation; no lies, only challenging truths; and nothing demeaning, only words to raise us up and begin to heal the many derisive divisions of our nation. And all through the sacred sanctions of our nation's fundamental governing system.
Thank you both for your service to this country and the impact you have already made for so many. The upcoming days will have struggles, but for the first time in four years, I feel the sunshine on my face beckoning in a new day, a new chapter, and a new chance for us to blossom together. I am enough. I am a woman and I am enough. I am a woman and I am enough and I am here to make this country good for all people.
Let's get to work.
Prepare, don't panic,
-Allison
