It is hard for me to believe that it has already been a month since we began our medical quarantine. As today was a Saturday, the regularity of the quarantine was driven home with the routine activities that we have come to associate with our weekends. It is no longer rising early to watch EPL soccer games and driving to our local gym for class, but getting up to make intentional time for our dog, clean and disinfect the house, exercise together in the living room, and plan for regular calls with family and friends.
Some of this new normalcy comes from knowing that Saturdays come with a family zoom call at the same time every week, and that tomorrow we will wake up and play D&D at the same as always too. It is comforting, even in the discomfort of it all. This week's family theme for the zoom call was in the broad theme of Easter, and so I made a bonnet with things I found around my house!
Today was also a day that had been a long-standing "girls day" for me and my best friends. It was a bizarre ease that we all hung out on a zoom chat for over five hours just talking, painting our nails, and watching movies. While I was on my call, my sweet husband surprised me by completing.a project I have been meaning to get to for a long time and completed our firepit for the backyard! I was so excited to find my surprise late in the afternoon.
Alex and I also spent a LOT of time tonight starting to re-train our dog, Rory, on his clicker training. He knows all the commands, but has felt recently that our commands are more half-hearted suggestions than anything else. After clicker training, we played the "Come!" game, where both of us have kibble on opposite sides of the room and practice getting Rory to come when called (as well as wearing him out quite a bit)! After that it was time for some good old fashioned stick chewing. A much deserved reward--and one that Rory jumped into, literally, when he found the tinder pile that Alex has stacked next to the firepit. :)
Although this month was nothing I ever would have predicted for my lifetime, I am so incredibly fortunate to be alive right now. It is a gift to be surrounded with love and support unaffected, unblemished, even in the face of such huge uncertainties.
It has been a long, beautiful day, and I am looking forward to a fun and festive game of D&D when I wake up tomorrow. Remember, people are good, people.
Prepare, don't panic.
