Today is the day I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 22 years ago. Although I have several autoimmune issues, I have controlled my diabetes as well as I can and was fortunate to have parents who controlled it for me when I was diagnosed at six years old. I do not have any complications from my diabetes other than a mild retinopathy than was reversed with injections when caught early on.
We diabetics have several weird sayings< one of them representing the day we were diagnosed being our "diaversary"--it is a day to reflect and be thankful for all the years of live, love , and laughter that we have shared thanks to the medical teams who correctly diagnosed us in time. While it would (and often is) easy to feel sorry for oneself with such an invasive illness, the diaversary is celebrated with "diabuddies" and "diabesties" who have undoubtedly had your back for the many bumps in the road of this crazy disease. Here's to another year living and looking for the bright spots!
Prepare, don't panic.
