This weekend has been jam-packed with new activities and was more fun than I ever could have anticipated being in quarantine. I don't know what it is about weekends. Maybe there just feels like an innate permission to set aside cares or obligations...maybe the structure of still just having a "weekend" feels too alluring to pass up.
Either way, this weekend was a good one. Friday started off a little rocky when I was told at 4:30 P.M. (right before everything closed) that due to the economic collapse that is currently enveloping our country, my diabetes supplies (medical items required for my daily survival as a type 1 diabetic) were no longer going to be supplied through my old supplier as they were considered "nonessential." Despite the initial shock and confirmatory follow up emails, we quickly got me approved with a new company that can get me what I need, even if the supplies are being rationed. None of it is ideal, but it is all survivable and so much better than it could be. Choosing to turn the page after all of that, we watched Iliza's "Don't Panic Pantry"and making tacos for dinner.
After tacos, it was early to bed for a fun Saturday. We kicked the day off with a LIVE zumba class led by my friend Amanda. I continue to marvel at all of the technology available to connect virtually with others. We had a great time with our salsa squad for an hour of listening to upbeat music, moving our bodies, and dancing together to beat the quarantine blues. By the end, we were pretty much all in sync! If any of you are looking for something fun and fitness-y to do during this time, send me a message and I can get you in contact with her!
In terms of the dancing itself, I also have been having a really wonderful time reconnecting with that part of myself that has always loved to dance. I have not done zumba in awhile, but I started back in 2010 (that is ten years, my friends-a decade of dancing!) It has been such a good reminder to me that fitness does not just have one face, or one reason for participating. That being said, it certainly was a full workout!
I really love being able to use my Apple watch to see how my body responds to different types of exercise.
It has been pretty spot-on when compared with the OrangeTheory Fitness "out-of-studio" app statistics which makes me feel that they are both pretty reliable ways of tracking my workouts (or both equally and exactly unreliable!)
After getting a good stretch + shower afterward (my dog was starting to wrinkle his nose when he walked by me!) we had a lovely "dinner date" with our family: my mom, Alex's parents and brother, and my brother + his fiancee.
We ended the night talking to one of my best friends and ended up accidentally spending about three hours on the phone/skype/FaceTime. Again.
So.
Many.
Methods.
Of.
Connection.
Today we used yet two more new methods when my uncle started up a D&D campaign for my cousins and me. The two of us had been talking about it for a little while since we were quarantined the same day, but I am overjoyed that all of us spanning at least three states can come together just to be silly and play games together.
One of my cousins is much more tech-savvy when it comes to screen-sharing and how best to do games together over distance so we employed her help in using "Roll20" (a gaming dashboard) and "Discord" (a talk and text window) to play for SIX HOURS straight. I don't think that any of us expected that (especially my poor uncle who was teaching a lot of beginners, and beginners hwo had no idea what they had signed up for!) It took a little finagling at first (my husband took this photo when I wasn't looking!), but my IT skills came in handy and soon we were on our way.
We are already planning for (and looking forward to) playing together again soon!
Here are our characters (left), and a picture of us with all of our digitized family members (below)!
Now my husband and I are off to *finally* watch the new (it's still new if I haven't seen it yet, okay?) Star Wars movie before heading to bed.
How did you lovely people spend your weekend? Did it feel like a weekend to you? If not, drop me a line and we will definitely include you in part of our next one! :)
As Alex reminded me today:
"I am just your neighborhood spiderman trying to keep everyone safe; thanking you for keeping people safe by staying in your neighborhood!"
Prepare, don't panic,
-Allison
